Visit Number Two

makes me happy.

Look who's already been back for their second visit to the zoo this year?!

We may have issues...

serious zoo animal loving issues that is!

That's what the kids ask for...

"Go see zoo animals?"

"We see zoo animals?"

And we're total suckers for it...

because we love zoo animals too!

Clearly a wonderful afternoon.

It's a though time stands still...

during these moments.

And to top it all off,

on our way home...

Kev turns forward, after looking back at Byrdie sitting in her seat, and says, "No wonder you love her. She looks exactly like me."

I smile.

He follows up with, "Byrdie. Daddy funny?!?"

She LAUGHS and replies...

"Mommy funny!"

Winning ;)

This Wednesday

makes me happy.

Today, 3 weeks after the D&C, I'm feeling just like my old self.

Oh yeah!

Perhaps the early morning dip in our half frozen pool to save my sister's dog Bella has something to do with it.

Maybe?

Regardless, happy, happy Wednesday!

Beefing Up Her Fries

makes me happy.

My Byrdie is a bit of a particular eater which has proven to be much more challenging then I had ever anticipated.

On top of that I seem to have a doctor who is more concerned with me getting x-amount of calories in her rather then focusing on getting higher nutritionally valued foods in her.

My compromise? Beef up whatever basic type food she will eat with as many nutrients as I can.

Exhibit A - the sweet potato fry. Sweet potatoes and yams have been a staple in Byrdie's diet since she was about 9 months old. And the sweet potato fry? Well that's just about her favourite food these days!

How I used to prepare her fries was the peel and chop up one sweet potato, toss it in a wee bit of olive oil, bake at 400 for 20 minutes, flip them and then check on the every 7 minutes or so until done.

Now I begin the same way but I also add some nutritional yeast while tossing them in olive oil, and after 20 minutes of baking, I flip them sprinkle some chopped up swiss chard, ground flax seeds and white sesame seeds on them.

Win - win, right? Calories and nutrients.

Directo Incorrecto

makes me happy.

We keep Byrdie's potty in the same spot in the bathroom .

Well... we did, that is, until I moved it's home to the other side of the bathroom and put the scale where the potty used to live.

Basically what I'm trying to tell you is... Byrdie peed on the scale.

Note - this is what a typical morning looks like around here, most in pyjamas, some naked, all goofy.

Getting Back Inside

makes me happy.

Remember all that beautiful weather we were enjoying here last week? Walking around Queen St. Visiting the zoo.

Well, it's gone.

But you know that's not going to slow down this fun train. It was no matter really. The fun was planned for indoors last night where a bunch of us decided to participate in a culinary challenge, judging the offerings of three student chefs and enjoying each dish with a specific paired wine.

Very fun.

Up first - artic char, which I sadly, did not like and I'm a fish girl! Perhaps the cilantro was biggest personal issue with the dish.

What's the deal with cilantro anyway? Everyone seems to either love it or hate it. Very little middle ground when it comes to cilantro, true?

Cornish hen three ways? Yes please.

Not only super tasty but I also totally dug the presentation.

And the buttery chardonnay it was paired with was perfection.

Beef cheeks? Why not? You know I was actually loving this dish the most until the sauce started to taste very much like something out of a BBQ sauce jar.

Shoot.

Sometimes I lost focus because of the company. The company is as import as any flavour or presentation, true?

As is the wine.

And the kind thought someone had for me to have a birthday do-over.

Basically, all in all... we're talking a pretty frickin' fun time.

Note - The Cornish Hen 3 Ways won.

The Space to Skip

makes me happy.

A long time dream of mine finally came true this week.

There is now a space just large enough for me to skip in the garage!

Can you seriously believe this? Life changing I tell you.

Note - I am currently skipping hard for 20 seconds, resting for 10 seconds, repeating 8 times.

Our Great Room

makes me happy.

This is the space that I want to try and keep you posted on in our house. The space where we recently knocked down that brick wall.

Our great room type space. Meaning it will house kitchen, dining and living in one.

It's the space that is set to undergo the biggest transformation and the ideas and plans for have been all over the map!

I think we've finally settled on something and things are already changing - hence the quick photo shoot from the four corners of the space to get it documented.

Better and more informative photos to come.

Note - My husband just had me in stitches for the last 2 hours by recounting his day for me. He began his story back in the hot tub an hour before these photos were taken... "For real - I have balanced the trolley on the escalator before Stacy."

Mud Pies

make me happy.

My friend Adel bought Byrdie this silly little book called Yummy Yucky when she was just a new born thing.

It's a very simple book, one page labels and illustrates something that is yummy to eat, say a 'Burger,' and the opposite page labels and illustrates something that is yucky to eat, say 'Boogers.'

Byrdie loves it. One of her very favourite books.

Without a doubt this book has taught her that soup, blueberries, and ear wax are yucky to eat. While soap, blue crayons, and eggs are yummy to eat.

What she didn't seem entirely convinced about the other day was if mud pies are yucky or yummmmmm eeeeee.

Hmmm?

A Couple Hours At The Zoo

makes me happy.

We're lucky in that we only live 25 minutes for the Toronto Zoo.

I'm also lucky that because of my job I get a generous admission discount at the zoo.

These two things, combined with the fact that Tammy and her kids, Elizabeth and Alex, were going to the zoo yesterday made our decision for an last minute trip to see the animals for a couple hours an easy one.

And while many of the large animals hadn't come out to play yet, due to the cold weather, there was still plenty of fun to be had.

Like trying to get a photo...

with all three children looking at the camera at the same time.

Holding hands,

and more hand holding (which melts my heart),

planes on the ground,

birds trying to steal our snacks,

lizards to climb on,

and wagons to ride in!

Did I mention there was hand holding?

Melting.

Have an awesome weekend.

Salad Season

makes me happy.

Anyone else have a salad season and a soup season? I thought so.

My soup season generally runs October thru February and my salad season March thru September.

Yay salad season!

So here she is, the inaugural salad of the 2011 season...

1 orange pepper chopped
1 yellow pepper chopped
2 carrots chopped
1 stalk of celery chopped
4 green onions chopped
1 tomato chopped

* toss everything together in large bowl

dressing

1/2 lemon squeezed
2 cloves of garlic minced
2 tablespoons of olive oil
2 tablespoons of nutritional yeast
2 tablespoons of tahini

* whisk together in a smaller bowl
* then pour dressing over salad and toss thoroughly
* next divide dressed salad between 2 serving bowls

top each salad with

1 tablespoon of pinenuts
1 tablespoon of chopped almonds
1 tablespoon of sesame seeds
1 tablespoon of goats milk feta

* crack some fresh black pepper of the top and voila!

Proving Homer, Bart and Marge wrong... You can win friends with salad!

Getting Outside

makes me happy.

It was pouring this morning. So hard, in fact, that I drove Kev to the subway which is only a five minute walk away.

But by the afternoon... it was sunny enough to go shoe shopping on Queen St!

We actually went shoe exchanging, Laura had bought them their first pairs of Chuck Taylors for Christmas but a wee bit too small, so exchanging we went.

Evan was all like, "Hey Byrdie! Look...

mirrors!"

"And Pigeons!"

And Byrdie was all like "New shoes! I'm wearing them out."

And then we went and picked up Kev from the bar. Which actually turned out to be perfect timing because I got to meet a couple of his favourite regulars who not only sent us home with the most thoughtful card and a lovely bottle of wine but also with a bag full of the coolest clothes for Byrdie.

Kevyn and I are certainly blessed when it comes to meeting wonderful people in our work places.

Back at the bar Evan was all... "Lemon!"

And his mom was all like... "Beer!"

And then as we left Byrdie was all "It's 6pm and still light out!"

Okay maybe that was me but... "It's 6pm and still light out!"

Spring is coming and we're getting outside. Oh yeah!
