Having The Best of Opportunities

makes me happy.

This past Sunday marked the end of our softball season.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed that we got eliminated in the quarter finals.

Our team had just been SO awesome all year long; strong bats, big arms, huge catches in the outfield, accurate plays on the infield, alas it was not meant to be on Sunday.

And you know what?  I felt a little heartbroken.

Not just because we didn't win the championship, truth be told, I was actually super stoked for Weston's, the team that did win.  They are a very friendly team with awesome players who managed to put together their best games on Sunday; which is exactly what you need to do to win it all.

I was simply sad it was over... and maybe a little disappointed in my own game, but really more sad that the season had come to an end, and that I won't be seeing all these dudes on a regular basis anymore, and that the summer is almost over.

I know!  Silly to be so emotional about things that are actually really good; good league, great friends, beautiful summer.

All things that I should really just be thankful for, and I am, I really, really am.

Perhaps this quote sums it up best...

Do you know what my favourite part of the game is? The opportunity to play.

When They're Down With OPT

makes me happy.

The birthday celebrations continue!

This one was for Sophia who was turning 4!  There she is on the left hand side, clasping her hands in delight at the sight of her cake.

You would too if your cake looked like that!

I think it's going to be a while before I loose interest in taking photos of kids and cake;

it just cracks me up how much they dig it!

Also, we've come to the conclusion our children enjoying playing with OPT (Other People's Toys) better then their own - is this a universal phenomenon?

And lastly, you'll be happy to know Stevie made it to the party this weekend!

She looks pumped, yes?  Sandy too!

Love & Laughter

make me happy.

This past Friday night...

Kev and I got cleaned up and went down to...

I jest.  Although we did run into some seriously cool fans on our way to...

Jen & Jeremy's...

wedding!

Look at the sun, the setting, the bride - how beautiful!

And the people, Kevyn's co-workers; whom I don't have the opportunity to see on a regular basis, were  so lovely to be around.  Each as gracious and charming as the next.

An evening spent celebrating love...

and enjoying this guy's witty banter.

Splendid indeed.

Learning Like Her

makes me happy.

While the girls napped this afternoon, correction - while Stevie napped and Byrdie played quietly by herself (her other option if she's not going to nap) this afternoon, I prepped some burgers for dinner tonight and watched a couple TED talks on my computer.

Today I searched talks about 'children', 'cause, well, you know, I've got two of them and sometimes think I should get some sort of clue as to what I'm doing over here.  And that's how I stumbled upon Alison Gopnik's : What do babies think?

I love how she commends babies thought processes, even compares it to the thinking of the most brilliant scientist, and suggests that adults could benefit from a little more baby thinking.

How? By thinking and behaving like we do when we travel to a new city, or when we fall in love. It's those moments when we allow our consciousness to expand rather then contract.

In Alison's words; "What's it like to be a baby?  It's like being in love in Paris for the first time after you've had three double espressos."

Let's do that!

Those Chilly November Nights

make me happy.

The birthday celebrations continue!

The photo above is the kids celebrating T's 2nd birthday on Friday.

Saturday we headed out to Niagara in two vehicles to celebrate Cole's 1st.  Byrdie wanted to ride with Evan & Edison so Kelly & Sandy took her with them while Stevie and I followed behind.  An hour and fifteen minutes into the drive I had to pull out of the bumper to bumper traffic we were stuck in and off the highway to check on the poor little munchkin in the back who wouldn't stop crying (I think we've got some teething action).  Sitting in a Costco parking lot halfway between Niagara and Toronto with the babe in my arms I had a melt down of my own trying to decide if I should keep heading west or turn back to Toronto.  The east won out and Stevie and I spent exactly two and a half hours in the car to go no where.  Bummer.  Byrd had a blast though.

Sunday was Byrdie's actual birthday so there were more presents and cake.

And today is my dad's big day - happy birthday Daddy-o!

All these August birthdays have got me seriously considering taking up decoupage this fall as I know first hand what can happen when the temperature drops and people get cozy by the fireplace.

Echo Beach In August

makes me happy.

Up until yesterday, since Stevie was born almost 4 months ago, I had yet to take an afternoon nap.

Instead, on the occasions when both girls napped at the same time, I had been opting to clean the kitchen, prep dinner, or maybe squeeze in some yoga or laps.

Part of my aversion to trying to nap when you have a new born is that you never know how long they're going to nap for.  Could be fifteen minutes.  Could be an hour and fifteen minutes.

But if I actually get in a horizontal position and my mind commits to shutting 'er down for an hour or so and it doesn't happen (read: the baby wakes up in 10 minutes), I feel so ripped off and waaaaay more tired then if I had just kept going.

So no naps.

Until yesterday.

The day after I planted myself in the front row of the...

My Morning Jacket concert here in Toronto and rocked out for 2 straight hours.

I needed that nap like nobody's business!  The ol' bod - she ain't 21 no more and was painin'... bad.

So I got those two munchkins in bed with me yesterday afternoon, told them it was a group nap, dared to close my eyes, and guess what?   No one made a peep for two hours.

Brilliant.

Exactly like the concert.

Pre-Ice Age

makes me happy.

Want to know something super fun to do with 3 year olds?

Stuff a small plastic figurine from the dollar store into a deflated balloon and then fill it with water and stick it in the freezer overnight.

Peel the the balloon off, hand the ball of ice to the child, and tell them to get the toy out.

Then... hover like crazy, make sure they don't hit themselves or anyone with the ice.  Don't let them drop it on their toes or whip it across the yard.  Hope for the best and realize this is a game much better suited for 6 year olds!

Which is exactly why they thought it was... super fun.

Shiny Happy People

make me happy.

Remember when I was banging on about how nice Toronto's weather has been this summer?

Well I was and it had been.

So nice, in fact, that when I was planning Byrdie's 3rd birthday party...

there was no doubt in my mind that a rainbow themed pool party...

would go off without a hitch.

Alas, there was a hitch;

rain.

But our friends came regardless...

and they brought their smiles too!

So what if the cake had to be served inside...

and smeared everywhere,

we are just...

so grateful...

for all the...

 wonderful...

people...

that put the...

bow

in our rain.

You all made the Byrd one very happy 3 year old.

Thank you kindly.
